What is Home Automation?

Home automation is the process of automating your home for any number of devices. It can be as simple as an integrated audio/video system in one room with a single custom remote that controls all of your devices.

Want to watch Cable? All you have to do is press a button on the remote labeled “Cable”.

The remote then switches to the correct input on the TV, the correct input for sound. The same would apply to other sources (NetFlix, BluRay, AppleTV).

What Are Some Benefits of Home Automation?

More advanced home automation systems might include hiding all electronics except for speakers and TVs in a less-traveled, remote corner of the house. Your TVs, projectors, monitors are connected to this media “hub”, as are your laptops, PCs, and other media sources. If you’re in the living room and want to watch a movie that is stored on your PC in your bedroom, you wouldn’t need to move your PC into the living room. Your TV would have access to your PC’s digital library. This is what we would call a distributed audio and video system.

Each room could then be controlled with a dedicated custom remote control or a smart devices such as an iPad or Android smartphone. Music can be selected via TV screens or smart devices. In addition to audio and video a smart home or a home with home automation might include lighting that is controlled from both wall keypads (in place of light switches) and smart tablets or smart phones.

Is Home Automation the Right Solution for Me?

Home automation isn’t just about not getting up to turn down lights when you’re watching a movie. Everyone could benefit from home automation. It’s not only a way to save money, but it can be a game-changer for those with accessibility challenges, like disabled military vets.
